The mission of the United States Patent and Trademark
Office (USPTO) is:
- To administer the laws relating to granting patents
and registering trademarks.
- To develop and advise the Executive Branch on
intellectual property protection.
The USPTO accomplishes its mission by examining patent
and trademark applications, issuing patents, registering trademarks,
disseminating patent and trademark information to the public, and
encouraging a domestic and international climate in which
intellectual property can flourish.
In
order to achieve this mission the USTPO has developed an
organizational structure
that provides an information technology management
framework that enables the evolutionary application of new
technology to maintain current production capability and to help
achieve the USPTO's strategic vision. This framework fosters
the standardization of hardware, software, and data to the maximum
extent possible while ensuring responsive support.
The successful development, deployment, and operation
of an automated information system requires close collaboration and
partnership between the business area sponsors. Individual
business areas define "what needs to be done" in terms of business
functions to be supported and business performance goals.
As
the USPTO strives to build its framework for the 21st
century, it must apply an Enterprise Architecture strategy that
allows the USPTO to maintain the overall integrity of its computing
systems while adapting rapidly to apply emerging technology.
The USPTO architecture strategy must enable the organization to add
new products or infrastructure components or replace existing ones
as new technologies are introduced into the marketplace.
