The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
(PTO) promotes industrial and technological progress in the
US by administering patents and trademarks, and serving as
a resource on patents, trademark, copyright protection, and
trade-related aspects of intellectual property. PTO’s recently
published “21st Century Strategic Plan” talks of
aggressively implementing e-Government, and sets out a number of
IT-related initiatives such as processing patents electronically,
creating an almost paperless operation, and making significant
upgrades in the area of information security. In order to accomplish
these goals, PTO realized a need to develop an Enterprise
Architecture – a comprehensive framework from which they can make
sound IT investments.
PTO Enterprise Architecture tries to
realize a number of benefits they hoped to gain from creating the
EA:
- The capture of facts about the PTO
mission, functions, and business foundation in an understandable
and transferable manner to promote better planning and decision
making;
- Improved communication among
business organization and IT organizations within the enterprise;
- Increased focus on the strategic use
of emerging technologies to better manage the enterprise’s
information and consistently insert those technologies into the
enterprise; and
- Expediting integration of legacy and
new systems and supporting the migration of legacy applications to
the evolving EA.
